5 Ways for Seniors to Stay Active Within Their Community

Moving to an Independent Living community presents exciting opportunities. During the first few weeks, you'll meet new people, explore community amenities and decorate your apartment with treasured mementos from home, creating a relaxing, personalized space. However, once the novelty wears off, you may have to get creative to maintain community engagement.

At Salina Presbyterian Manor, we offer a range of activities, amenities and programs to ensure there's always something to do and enhance resident engagement. Explore ways to stay active within your community to maintain a fulfilling life.

Plan Daily Activity Goals

Having achievable goals can help you feel a sense of purpose, motivating you to stay active. Try planning daily activity goals so you have something to look forward to each day. When you plan daily activities, you already know what to expect and don't have to waste precious time finding something to do. This can make it easier to establish structured routines, which can improve productivity, reduce stress and help you feel more in control of your life.

Salina Presbyterian Manor offers daily planned activities, including games, happy hours and fitness classes. If you need help planning daily activity goals, check our monthly calendars to see what's coming up and which activities you wish to integrate into your routine.

Inform Your Doctor of Changes

Monitoring your physical and mental health is crucial to staying active. Anytime you experience a routine or lifestyle change, inform your doctor to see if they have any advice or guidance. This can help you integrate suggested activities or practices into your routine to enhance health and well-being.

Our Independent Living community also features on-site health services to help residents maintain healthy, active lifestyles. We provide home health care and rehabilitative therapies, and transportation to local appointments as needed. This makes it easier to follow medical advice or access services if you don't have a primary care physician.

Follow Community Events

Community events present ideal opportunities to expand your social network and stay active. We host numerous events to cater to our residents' diverse interests and make each day a bit more special. Catch a Saturday night movie or prepare a cherished family recipe for a resident potluck. You can also attend exercise classes or off-site excursions to nearby parks, museums and other local attractions.

Additionally, our community features the award-winning Art Is Ageless® program, allowing residents to unleash inner creativity and express themselves through activities including painting and quilting. By partnering with local art groups and exhibits, we help residents connect with a greater community and hone artistic skills. We also offer Just Ask, a lifelong learning event series featuring educational seminars on topics including technology basics, Medicare and healthy eating.

Go for a Walk With a New Friend

If you run out of solo entertainment ideas, you can always invite a new friend for a walk around the community. Our campus contains Ralph Reitz Memorial Park, which features a quarter-mile walking trail circling a fishing pond. Enjoy scenic views of our landscaped grounds before resting at the pavilion for a picnic or friendly conversation.

Exploring the community with a friend can also help expand your social network. You can easily make friends by attending community activities, events and meals or getting to know immediate neighbors. As you meet more people, you may discover additional social and recreational opportunities, preventing loneliness or isolation from negatively impacting your health.

Start or Join a Club With Your Interests and Hobbies

Moving to a new environment doesn't mean you have to retire old interests and hobbies. In fact, we encourage residents to engage in their favorite pastimes or explore new hobbies by joining a club aligning with their skills and interests. Our clubs encompass a wide range of passions, including books, coffee and cooking. Additionally, we offer religious study groups and choir practice sessions.

If you have an idea for a club we don't currently offer, let us know. We embrace resident involvement to ensure our community offerings align with their interests and needs. Plus, starting a club and recruiting members can give you a goal to work toward and help you stand out within the community.
