Differences Between Assisted Living and Memory Care at Salina

Looking for long-term care for an aging loved one can be intimidating. The research you’ve done has already shown you the differences in levels of care, cost, amenities and team member training in each community. But what if you’re looking for a loved one with cognitive decline? How should you plan for their future? How do you make that decision? Before making any choices, it's important to understand the unique features of Assisted Living and Memory Care so you can determine which senior living environment meets your loved one’s current needs.

Comparing Safety Features

When considering Assisted Living versus Memory Care, safety is a paramount concern for families and individuals alike. While both senior living options prioritize the well-being of residents, there are distinct approaches to ensuring safety in each setting. Understanding these differences can help you make an informed decision.

Safety in Assisted Living

Safety is a top priority in assisted living, with staff trained to provide assistance and support while promoting independence. Common safety features include handrails and well-maintained living spaces.

At Salina Presbyterian Manor in Salina, Kansas, we have emergency call systems in each residence so your loved one can get help anytime. Our community is also equipped with smoke alarms and a sprinkler system to protect residents from fire. We lock our doors between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. and a team member regularly walks the building during these hours. Furthermore, local law enforcement performs nightly patrols on our campus.

Safety in Memory Care

In Memory Care, safety measures are meticulously designed to meet the unique needs of residents with cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Common safety features include specialized monitoring systems and dementia-friendly environments to minimize risk.

The Morrison Center at Salina Presbyterian Manor has trained staff available round-the-clock to provide assistance and supervision, ensuring residents’ support and safety in Memory Care. We provide 24/7 security, with campus doors locked from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. Besides a secure building, we also have a secure outdoor courtyard, allowing residents to enjoy outdoor spaces while protecting them from wandering. Like Assisted Living, our Memory Care community also has emergency call systems, smoke alarms, a sprinkler system and nightly on-campus patrols.

Therapy and Care Considerations

Each setting offers unique therapy and care approaches tailored to the diverse needs of its residents. Exploring these distinctions sheds light on the comprehensive support available and helps you select the most suitable environment for your loved ones' holistic well-being.

Therapy and Care in Assisted Living

Assisted Living residents benefit from personalized care plans tailored to their individualized needs and preferences. Care includes assistance with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, grooming and medication management. Salina also offers therapy services, including physical, occupational and speech therapies, to help residents maintain their independence and overall well-being. We provide various activities and health programs to support complete care.

Therapy and Care in Memory Care

In Memory Care, therapy and care are specialized to meet the unique needs of individuals with cognitive challenges. Our trained staff members provide 24-hour supervision and personalized support, focusing on activities and therapies designed to stimulate cognitive function and enhance quality of life.

Social Engagement Approaches

Social engagement is a pivotal factor in Assisted Living and Memory Care. While both settings emphasize community involvement and interaction among residents, the approaches taken can vary. Social interaction enhances your loved one’s quality of life, so understanding the dynamics within each setting will help you choose the one that aligns best with their preferences.

Social Engagement in Assisted Living

A vibrant community atmosphere where residents can connect, socialize and participate in various activities and events fosters social engagement in Assisted Living. From fitness classes and hobby clubs to group outings, residents have ample opportunities to stay active while building friendships. Supportive team members encourage participation and interaction to help promote a sense of belonging.

At Salina, we offer a full calendar of activities that promote social engagement in our Assisted Living community. Popular events include movie nights on Saturdays, gardening groups, potlucks and day trips, among others.

Social Engagement in Memory Care

We nurture social engagement in our Memory Care community through tailored programs and activities designed to accommodate the unique needs of residents with cognitive decline. These activities include one-on-one engagement with team members who promote a warm, inclusive environment. Residents engage in meaningful interactions to maintain a sense of community and belonging. We offer numerous activities to promote social wellness, including group activities and a family dining environment to further encourage social engagement.
